Carbondale First Friday @35mm

How fun to be out on the streets shooting again! It was great to see people coming out and enjoying the cool mountain evening at Carbondale Colorado’s June First Friday.

I hadn’t shot at 35mm for some time, so I dusted off my Zeiss 35 1.4 and set out with the compact, full-frame Sony a7C. Overall, I’m happy with the results and I’m reminded of what a great focal length this is for street portraits, especially when capturing full body shots or groups. This lens has a nice subject-isolating pop when shot wide open. On the not-so-great side, I noticed that this glass renders colors a bit blandly. A little bump in saturation did the trick in post.

I think I’m going to shoot with the Zeiss 55 1.8 next time. While shooting in Austin I was more comfortable getting inside people’s personal comfort zone. Needless to say, the vibe here is different. I think the 55mm focal length will allow me to back off a bit and help people feel more at ease. Just a thought. We’ll see.

First Friday happens every month in Carbondale’s Creative District. People enjoy local arts, galleries, shopping, restaurants, live music and entertainment.
