Adjusting Focus: Joe Van Wyk ’87 uses smartphone photography to find healing and inner peace

Decades after graduating from Trinity University, I find myself reflecting on a journey that led me to write The Mindful Photography Field Guide. When I graduated, I could never have imagined that photography and mindfulness would play such a pivotal role in my life, especially in helping me manage anxiety and depression. Back then, I had a lot of doubts about my path. I tried to follow a more traditional career route in business, but it wasn’t until I embraced my creative passions that I began to find peace.

In my recent interview with Trinity University, I shared how this practice of mindful smartphone photography helped me during one of the darkest periods of my life. What started as a way to escape the mental spirals of anxiety became a tool for healing. Decades removed from my college years, I have learned to embrace the unexpected. This practice is about noticing what doesn’t fit—both in photography and in life—and accepting it as part of God’s plan.

Through mindful photography, I focus on the present moment, capturing scenes that stand out or seem out of place, reminding myself that even life’s mismatches have value. This practice not only allows me to be more present but has also become a tool for sharing peace and healing with others.

Looking back, I am grateful for the opportunity to blend mindfulness, creativity, and faith into a practice that offers relief and connection. I hope my journey inspires others to find their own moments of peace and stillness, no matter where they are in life.

Shine Your Light,
Joe
